The 2026 tri-nation experiment — the first World Cup hosted by three countries

💡 The 2026 World Cup is the first tri-nation host — USA (78 matches), Mexico (13), and Canada (13) — and all three advanced to the knockouts.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is making history as the first tournament ever hosted by three nations simultaneously: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The USA hosts the lion's share with 11 cities and 78 matches (including all knockout rounds from the quarterfinals onward), while Mexico hosts 3 cities with 13 matches and Canada hosts 2 cities with 13 matches.

The tri-nation bid beat Morocco in a 2018 FIFA vote, partly because the infrastructure was already in place — massive NFL stadiums, existing transport networks, and proven hosting experience. Mexico has hosted two previous World Cups (1970 and 1986), while the USA hosted in 1994. For Canada, this is a first.

All three host nations qualified automatically, and all three advanced to the knockout stage. The Round of 32 features mouth-watering matchups: Canada vs Morocco, Mexico vs England, and USA vs Belgium. The host nations aren't just here to participate — they're competing to make deep runs on home soil.
